How to Replace a Nissan Key Fob Battery
If your Nissan key fob has stopped working or the signal seems weaker than usual, it’s likely time for a battery replacement. The good news is that changing the battery is a quick DIY task that doesn’t require a trip to the dealership. Follow these simple steps to swap out the battery and restore full functionality to your Nissan key fob.
Tools and Supplies You’ll Need
-
New CR2025 or CR2032 battery (verify the correct type in your owner’s manual)
-
Small flathead screwdriver or coin
-
Your Nissan key fob
Step 1: Release the Backup Key
Look for the small latch on the back of your Nissan key fob. Slide it to release the hidden mechanical key. Remove it completely so you can access the fob’s case.
Step 2: Open the Fob Housing
With the mechanical key removed, locate the small slot or seam along the edge of the fob. Insert a flathead screwdriver or coin into this opening and gently twist to separate the casing. Work carefully so you don’t crack the plastic.
Step 3: Remove the Old Battery
Inside, you’ll see the round battery secured in place. Take note of its position, especially which side is facing up (the “+” sign should usually be visible). Use the screwdriver to lift the old battery out.
Step 4: Insert the New Battery
Place the new CR2025 or CR2032 battery into the slot, matching the same orientation as the one you removed. Make sure it sits flat and snug.
Step 5: Snap the Case Shut
Press the two halves of the key fob back together until they click into place. Then reinsert the mechanical key into its compartment.
Step 6: Test the Key Fob
Walk to your Nissan and try the lock, unlock, or remote start button. If everything works right away, your new battery is installed correctly.
How Long Does a Nissan Key Fob Battery Last?
On average, Nissan key fob batteries last 2-3 years before needing replacement. If you notice that the remote range is reduced, or if you need to press buttons more than once, that’s a clear sign it’s time for a new battery.
